In the heart of scenic Sparreholm, a short drive from Stockholm, you will find restaurant Kohagen. But this restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it’s a true passion project, a dream come true for the couple behind it, Emma and Gustaf. What makes this place unique is not only the sublime food and idyllic atmosphere, but the fact that it is also their home. We’ve helped the couple design and build their beautiful wine room!
Emma, an experienced chef and trained confectioner, and Gustaf, former restaurant manager and passionate wine lover, decided to combine their passions and create a place where food, wine and nature merge in harmony. And their journey began in 2022 when they moved to Sparreholm and started building their dream home on Emma’s family farm, Gråsta Gård.
"We really love what we do, but it became harder as parents of small children to be away and work many evenings. So when we decided to leave Åre and build a house in Sparreholm, we knew that we had to do something different in order to continue with what we like best," says Emma.
This gave rise to the idea of combining the home with a restaurant where the couple can decide on opening hours, menu and guests themselves.
Light shades with Caverack
But one of the most remarkable features of their new home is the beautiful wine room, which has been built with care and expertise under expert guidance by Niclas from Wineandbarrels.
This wine room is not just a collection of bottles, it is a tribute to the art of wine and a manifestation of Gustaf’s passion for wine.
The wine room is 20 sqm and has a central location right next to the kitchen, so you can enjoy the room while being presented with an exquisite wine-friendly menu that is always based on the nature around Kohagen.
"We always serve a tasting menu that is secret to our guests. The menu will be renewed, but some of our signature dishes (customers’ favourites) will always appear.'' Tells Gustav.

Heart of the house
The wine room is built from Wineandbarrel’s beautiful Caverack wine racking modules. The room follows the theme of the house with very raw concrete, beautiful wood, black details and plastered walls, so that it blends in incredibly well with the whole of the house. All wine racks are treated with a thin layer of white hard wax oil, which gives an elegant look to the wine room and looks great with the rest of the house. Gustav is very satisfied with the result.
“The wine room is the heart of the house and everyone who has visited us so far always ends their journey here.” Expresses Gustaf. For Gustaf, the wine cellar has always been a central part of their project.
Gustaf is happy to share his thoughts behind the construction of the wine cellar. With a love for the old world, especially Piemonte and German Riesling, he wanted to create a space that reflected his passion and aesthetic sense.
"I usually stick to the old world in general, so that will be the foundation here at Kohagen as well. My private wine collection is about 50-60% from Piedmont, but I am also incredibly weak for German Riesling." adds Gustaf with a smile.
