Wine Cooling Units for Wine Rooms

With a wine cooling unit in your wine room, you can store your wines under top-notch conditions.

Build Your Own Wine Cellar with the Perfect Climate Control System

Build your own wine cellar with the ideal wine cooling unit developed specifically for this purpose.

What Is a Wine Cooling Unit for a Wine Cellar?

If you have a well-insulated room, you can create your own wine cellar and ensure perfect temperature conditions. All you need is a wine cooling unit, also known as a wine cellar cooling system.

The cooling unit itself should be mounted in a wall opening, functioning similarly to a traditional air conditioner for your wine cellar. It ensures that the air in your wine room is cooled to the ideal temperature for wine storage and long-term aging.

Cooling Small Spaces

The better the room and door are insulated, the more efficient the wine cooling unit will be, as it reduces the need for constant cooling.

Wine cooling units are specially designed with wine storage in mind. They can maintain a constant temperature between 10 and 14ºC throughout the room.
It's important to ensure that the room where the cooling unit will be installed is well-insulated, including walls, ceiling, and floor, with effective insulating materials.

Portable Air Conditioner vs. Wine Cooling Units

Can’t you just use a regular portable air conditioner in a small room? Sure, but it won’t be ideal for storing wine.
A regular home air conditioner typically can’t cool below 17ºC, while wine thrives at around 12-14ºC. Moreover, most air conditioners have built-in dehumidifiers, while wine rooms often require the opposite.

A wine cellar should not be too dry, as corks may dry out on the side not in contact with the wine. This can result in stiff, brittle corks that become leaky and allow oxygen into the wine, leading to oxidation and spoilage.

Wine Cooling Units for Wine Rooms

A wine cooling unit specifically designed for wine cellars differs from regular air conditioners by providing a more stable temperature through a more precise thermostat.
Additionally, wine cooling units installed in wine rooms can monitor and regulate humidity. A climate-controlled wine cellar ensures a relative humidity of at least 50%.

Converting a Room into a Wine Cellar

A wine cellar or wine room can be placed almost anywhere in the house, though avoiding areas with direct sunlight is recommended.
It is crucial that the area where the warm air is vented is well-ventilated and that temperatures do not exceed 30°C.

Note! A wine cooling unit will not work properly, and the warranty will not be valid, if the room is not fully insulated, including walls, floor, ceiling, and door.

EuroCave Wine Cooling Units

Since 1976, the world’s leading producer of wine storage refrigerators, EuroCave, has been providing optimal wine storage for millions of bottles globally. Based in northern France, EuroCave consistently delivers quality that rivals envy.
EuroCave doesn’t just make wine refrigerators—they also produce wine cooling units and climate control systems for wine cellars. Their wall-mounted systems come in two sizes: the smaller Inoa25 can cool rooms up to 25 m³ (minimum 10 m³), while the larger Inoa50 handles rooms between 15 and 50 m³.

Insulating Your Wine Room

The level of insulation in your wine room significantly impacts the wine cooling unit's effectiveness and energy consumption. Heat loss through walls, ceiling, and floor requires the unit to work harder, increasing energy costs.

Key insulation considerations when building an insulated wine room:

For new partition walls:
Place insulation material within the cavity of the frame structure.

Existing rooms:
Insulate the walls with insulation boards or batts and finish with drywall or similar materials.

Floors and ceilings:
Insulate the cavities of the floor and ceiling. For solid floors and ceilings, construct a secondary insulated surface.

The insulation material should be 80mm thick high-performance polystyrene or similar material with comparable insulation properties. The insulation material should provide an R-value greater than 2.66 or a U-value below 0.35. Avoid using fiber or mineral wool-based insulation—polystyrene or polyethylene foam blocks are better.

Doors:
Ensure the doors are airtight, solid, and insulated.

Glass:
Glass is a poor insulator and is not recommended. Small windows in doors or walls may be acceptable if double-glazed (preferably triple-glazed) with proper insulation.

If you choose to vent warm air through ducts connected to the system:

  • Only vent warm air.
  • Maximum total duct length with two 90° bends: 8 meters
  • Maximum total duct length with three 90° bends: 5 meters
  • Minimum duct diameter with a reduction adapter: 160mm
  • Each wall opening should be at least 210mm in diameter
  • Distance between the centers of the openings: 359mm

As an option, you can choose to vent warm air from either the right or left side of the unit’s cabinet. The standard configuration is for venting in the center of the cabinet.
